HARDNESS
TEST FOR
SUITA #65
GREY SUITA AWASEDO #65 with Renge
205 - 76 - 34-40mm
1.4 kg. = 3.1 lbs.
1950s or earlier and probably from the 1930s. These older stones are
sometimes thicker or wider at one end, and this one is like that. The
chiseled back sits nearly perfectly flat on a table but is tilted because one
processed after the 1950s are generally cut more to a rigid standard box
shape with saw marks reflecting the modern use of diamond tipped blades
giving a smoother regular saw finish.
The light gray body is mottled with patches of pure white and flecks of
renge. The inclusions do not affect sharpening in any way and I have test
sharpened over all of these areas with no ill effects. The back is beautifully
hand chiseled and shows lots of renge scattered here and there as you can
see in the photos. This is the first stone I have seen with this gray body and
white patches.
