Vintage Historic NAKAYAMA KIITA KAMISORI TOISHI. This stone was actually used as a barbers hone in
Japan, and judging from the thickness it was used and loved for many, many years. Nakayama is famous for
their kiita stones and this is an excellent example, very pure throughout, intense yellow color, super fine and
very hard. This is what a razor hone is at the highest levels of quality.
This kiita stone has a small area of kawa or natural skin showing that is typical of Nakayama stones that
goes from dark reddish/brown to umber to a black with a touch of sparkling sheen on one corner and the
back. At 208mm long there is a generous honing area to work with. The top has been lapped flat save for the
to end edges which dip slightly.
This stone and the other kamisori toishi on my site are part a private collection assembled in Japan over the
past 40 years in the area around Toyama by a collector of shaving implements. Many of the hones were
actually used by barbers, some dating to the 1920s or earlier, while others were simply prepared by the
miners as razor hones as evidenced by the size and fine quality of the stones grit composition.
