Vintage Nakayama suita kamisori toishi. This odd sized stone has been lapped flat and has beveled edges.
It is pure in texture, very fine and can be used as a finishing, pre-finishing stone but not a polishing stone. I
have shaved off this stone with total comfort and with some skill it will give an edge a HHT-4 results with no
problem. With a light slurry the cutting action is noticeably fast and with just clear water it will help to develop a
very even fine edge.
It has a hand hewn back and shows some old black paint residue on the sides and back indicating that it
may have mounted on a wooden base at some point. The top surface displays renge and momiji patterns
against a gray background. A gorgeous stones with lots of life left in it.
This stone and the other kamisori toishi on my site are from a world class private collection of over 400
pieces assembled in Japan over the past years in the area around Toyama by a collector of shaving
implements. I was lucky enough to purchase total collection over the last 2 years. Many of the hones were
actually used by barbers, some dating to the 1920s or earlier, while others were simply prepared by the
miners as razor hones as evidenced by the size and fine quality of the stones grit composition.
