#549   Okudoi transitional tomae double sided stone

A flawed stone with a modest price, this tomae is truly a razor hone stone
and I have test honed and shaved from it from both sides using identical
Henckels razors. In using a diamond plate generated slurry I found that the
asagi green side was slightly slower but that both side were the same
fineness and each produced an HHT-4 to 5 test and a close shave.

The main flaw I see with this stone is on the gray side in the form
of a bias layering of the sediment material that you can see in the photos
at the middle area on the gray side. I extensively tested this side looking
for scratches left from the bias grit and found that I could not feel the area
as odd with a slurry but when I went to clear water I could detect the spot
as being rough. Under my microscope at 315x I did not see any
bad scratches or nicks in the blade even though I ran the razor over that
spot over and over from 2 different directions. My conclusion is that the
spot is ugly, it can be felt but it is not toxic.

Now the transitional nature of this stone is that the green asagi layer is less
than 1mm thick, so the body of the stone is essentially gray. I have lapped
about 1mm off the gray side and the bias patch persisted. I can only assume
it will remain as you see it during the life of the stone.

The stone (toishi) has been lapped perfectly flat and the corners and edges
beveled unless otherwise noted.  All of my stones come with a tested and
appropriately sized tomonaguara slurry stone, and a money back guarantee
minus the return shipping.
