Okudo shiro suita Generational Stone #296
This huge hard shiro suita is from the deepest layer of the
Kyoto higashi mono eastern mine structure. I refer to these
thick stones as Generational because they will last more than
one life time under normal use. At 210 x 80mm wide it is a true
grade 30 stone that will easily cover the 70mm kanna blade
seen in the photos. Weighing in at 4 1/4 pounds there will be a
shipping fee attached to this stone, the shipping weight will be 6
pounds (2.5 kilo).
Although very hard, these Okudo shiro (white) suita stonesa are
famous for their cutting speed and fineness, and this one will not
disappoint you. I have tested the suita in that small area below the
wreath with a MO-MAX tool steel (hardened to HRC 63-65) tool
bit and my most stubbornly hard German straight razor. The first
pass with the bit on clear water produced black, and with the
razor I ended up with a shave ready edgein just a few minutes.
The ink stamps read from the top left down: SHO HON YAMA
AWASE TOISHI (correct original mountain sharpening stone) and
within the wreath GOKUJO (superior quality), to the lower center
SU ITA (honey comb layer) and within the deckle frame GOKUJO,
IPPON SEN (#1 select piece), and to the lower right
corner SAN KATA (type 3)
Any and all of the inclusions in this stone are typical to the Okudo
suita, they are not toxic, are tight, solid and filled with softer minerals
and will not scratch any steel blade. There are 3 open inclusions
on the right edge that look like they were associated with handling
or shipping the stone after it was processed, and are so small and
out of the central working area that it is easy to overlook
them at first. The bottom left photo of the stone shows one of these.
The back of the stone has a perfect Okudo kawa skin made up of
ocher, umber and burnt umber tones that is similar to the Nakayama
kawa except for the missing black mineral that sparkles.
The stone (toishi) has been lapped perfectly flat and the corners
and edges beveled unless otherwise noted. All of my stones
come with a money back guarantee minus the return shipping.
