Nakayama iro tomae #22
A colored or iro tomae from one of the shallower layers, I believe that this stone
was mined in the 1950 by Kato-san, the owner of the mine during that period.
This stone has been trimmed at the upper end to remove some damage. The
ink stamps read down the upper right Shin Hon Zan (chosen original mountain)
and below that in smaller kanji Sai Ko Kyu (very best quality).
When the stone in wet it shows shades of blue, green yellow and faint red that
look like a mellow sunset. The stone is very solid and is perfect for chisels or
plane blades or even razors. The back has been lapped flat and the front top
side has been lapped to preserve the stamps. It can now be used on the front
or the back. One side and one end have been sanded as you can see in the
photos, and all of the edges have been beveled. One corner has an area of
the original kawa skin that has the classic Nakayama colors of ocher, umber
and burnt umber with a small area of thick black crystals.
